Coachella 2014, day two, brought real hip-hop back.
Nasty Nas hit the stage just in time for the 20-year anniversary of “Illmatic,”- one of the most pivotal
hip-hop albums of all time. Decked in well-dressed
finesse, Nas brought the aura of classic boom bap into the new millennium. “I bet this is
older than some of yall out there…but we here tonight, because life
is beautiful,” a poetic Nas glares through themic. Guzzling a
bottle of Spirit Hennessey, Nas performed the Illmatic track-list in its entirety. Surprising crowds with a special
guest appearance from formal rival Jay-Z, the collaboration on
songs “Dead Presidents,” and “Where I’m from,” reminded us
why Hov and Nas remain culturally relevant in the hip-hop
game today. In the sea of bobbing hands, brave hearts, and incandescent strobe
lights, Nas took his performance one step further by
bringing out rap mogul P.Diddy to perform the classic anthem “Hate Me Now.” Diddy mystified the valley crowd with a bottle
of Ace of Spades champagne sending crowd hype levels into a state of
elevated craze. Nas proved why his music is forever timeless as he closed out his set
with “One Mic.”Explore
rap and tell me Nas aint all that- what he stands for,
speaks for itself. Enjoy 43 minutes of an emcee who still possesses lyrical rawness....and even after 20 years…Nas still got it.
