D’Angelo To Release ‘Voodoo’ Follow-Up

D’Angelo‘s manager and longtime label executive Kevin Liles recently sat down with Billboard to confirm the follow-up of Grammy award-winning album Voodoo will release this year. In 2013, Liles insisted that the album was in it’s final stages and was undergoing sequence, mixing, and mastering finalization. While some may be hesitant to believe the album is actually unveiling this year due to previous claims, Liles confirms that fans can expect an album release and an international tour starting in October.
Even in the absence of his album release, D’Angelo has officially made his return after his ten year hiatus. In 2012, the legendary artist released four new melodies on his D’Angelo 2012 Tour: “Ain’t That Easy,” “The Charade,” “In Another Life,” and “Sugar Daddy.” Last year, he participated in “Brothers in Arms,” a duo show collaboration with longtime confidant Questlove. The duo encored their leading edge performance at the Brooklyn Bowl in New York City and at Carnegie Hall along with members of the Roots and the Revolution. D’Angelo also talked shop with Billboard Alumni Nelson George at the Brooklyn Museum in an in-depth interview segment at one of the premier events for the Red Bull Music Academy Festival.
But, as the waiting game continues for D’angleo’s album release, Liles tells Billboard what fans can expect from the forthcoming project:
“To limit it to soul is not the case, because there is a rock influence. But at the same time, it’s very melodic and there’s an influence of all the things he loves: there’s James Brown, there’s Prince, and everything people grew up loving D’Angelo for, from ‘Brown Sugar,’ to ‘Vodoo.’ It’s a mixture and an evolution of where he is right now. And you have to think that when you have the opportunity to work 10 years on an album, that the album’s truly gonna be what you want it to be. Is it the kind of sound that he did with earlier records? No, its not.”
Although an official release date has yet to be announced, the album is expected to drop sooner than later. Stay tuned for more details.
