Stream Kelis 'Food' Album Courtesy of NPR

Singer-songwriter and newly certified chef, Kelis, cooks up her sixth studio album, Food. The effort is entirely produced by TV One Radio guitarist Dave Sitek and his 13-piece band set. Transitioning from her 2010 dance-infused album, Flesh Tone, Kelis metamorphosed Food into a genre-bending, throwback R&B project with heavy instrumentation and nostalgic feelings of yesteryear. Playing the titled off soul food items, Kelis takes listeners through various flavors of life, love affairs, and sex. The glorious feel-good melodies of “Jerk Ribs,” “Cobbler,” and “Biscuits N’ Gravy” blur the lines between old-school funk and soulful gospel hooks, that create fried-like textures around her organic lyricism. The contrasting mellow vibes from “Runnin” and “Floyd” intensify a subtle steamed approach with raspy yet distinct vocal expressions.

Stream the album courtesy of NPR and be on the lookout for the album available April 22 via itunes. Let Food, feed your soul.
