This past January, six-time Grammy Award-winning hip-hop duo Outkast announced their reunion in celebration of the 20th anniversary, by performing at more than 40 music festivals worldwide beginning with their April 11th performance at Coachella. In honor of the occasion, Brooklyn-based MICK (formerly Mick Boogie) sent the blogosphere into a frenzy with his compilation mix of Big Boi and Andre 3000 rarities, demos, collaborations and remixes.
The retrospective blend of dirty south slang, poetic trap lyricism and g-funk bass tablatures create a speakerboxx of organic hip-hop sounds that reminds listeners why the two-man crew will forever remain legendary.
Beginning the voyage with sampled lyrics from 1998-released track “Rosa Parks,” MICK pivots into the intergalactic space-inspired introduction from the duo’s fourth studio album, Stakonia. The effort features from Raekwon, Goodie Mob, 8ball, Sleepy Brown, UGK, Cee-Lo Green, Lil Wayne, Devin the Dude, Slick Rick, Trick Daddy, Frank Ocean, and more, and MICK successfully cultivates nearly two hours of classic induced aesthetics.
Released via his website, MICK shared a short statement on the mixtape:
Outkast, hands down, is one of my favorite groups of all time – in any genre of music. Their music set trends, defined a generation, and created a mood unlike any other. In honor of their Coachella reunion, I put together a fun mix of Big Boi and Andre 3000 rarities, demos, collaborations and remixes. If you’re a true fan and looking to dig a little bit deeper and really enter the world of the Dungeon Family – this is made for you. And it’s hella long – maybe TOO long – almost two hours!
