Visuals: Janelle Monae "Heroes"

Last month, Janelle Monáe hit the studio to record a soulful cover of David Bowie’s classic anthem “Heroes.” The Electric Lady now releases the official visual for the anti-bullying anthem, as a part of Pepsi’s global #FUTBOLNOW campaign, “Now Is What You Make It.”
The cinematic Alyssa Pankiw-directed clip captures a group of bullied outsiders gaining inspiration from Janelle’s comic book superhero character, in order to overcome adversity. Embellished in their homemade superhero attire, the misfits go head-to head with their oppressors in their battle for justice.
In an interview with Rolling Stone, Monáe spoke on the inspiration behind her Bowie rendition:
“The way the world is today, you can never write enough inspiring or motivating songs or songs that embolden the people and make us feel fearless. Those lyrics spoke to me as someone who is for the people. I try to inspire and lead by example and be the change I want to see. So this song is a poster child for just that.”
The artful rock-soul anthem will be featured on Pepsi’s upcoming compilation, Beats of the Beautiful Game, with additional tracks from Kelly Rowland, Santigold, Timbaland and more. The LP is set to release June 10.
